WHY CUTOFF FOR SC / ST AND OBC ARE LOW ?
If you are familiar with environment of competitive
exams like IIT JEE , NEET and CLAT , then you must have come across this
question that how can be the cutoff for reserved category so low ? if you are from general category , you may
also feel like that it is unfair. In
this article we will discuss why cutoffs are so low and even after 75 years of
independence , the gap between general , obc , sc and st is not filling .
First we have to understand that how seat allocation in made
in these exams . suppose if there is 100 seats in college and 60 of them are
for reserved category and out of this 60 seats 13 are for sc students then
those 13 students whose ranks are within 13 in their category [ suppose his AIR
2909 and category rank 09 ] will get the seat.
As we know that in reserved category seat , candidate from
that category only will get the seat despite his AIR and category rank will be
counted . If we look at the population distribution of india , SC – 19.7 % , ST
– 8.5 % , OBC – 41.1% , FORWARD – 30.8 % . we can see that sc and st are very
low in numbers compared to others and many of them still lacks basic education
and facilities . The reason being they
are low in numbers results in low applications . lets take IIT JEE 2024 in which total 12.3
lakhs registered out which 4.16 lakhs from general , 4.9 lakh from obc , 1.5
lakh from ews , 1.2 lakhs from sc and 0.41 lakhs from st . After looking at
these statistics we can say that low participation of these reserved category
results in low cutoffs .
Another possible reason of this can be lack of awareness and
education in rural areas because most of the sc , st and obc resides rural
areas and cant think of highly competitive exams like IIT JEE which requires
coaching and guidance and exams like CLAT which requires 4000rs for just
filling application form . there cannot be a single reason for low cutoffs but
these are most possible reasons .
